Anusha Subramanian is a rare combination of intellect, grit, and heart. With over two decades of experience in journalism and a decade-long journey in mountaineering, Anusha embodies the spirit of storytelling with purpose. She is a British Chevening Scholar, a TEDx speaker, an award-winning journalist, and the founding partner of Bohemian Adventures LLP, an initiative committed to bringing the transformative power of the outdoors to all, especially those often left out of it.
Anusha’s early career was rooted in the newsroom. A post-graduate in Economics and Journalism & Mass Communication, she worked with reputed publications including Mid-Day, Business Standard, Hindustan Times, and Business Today (India Today Group). Her journalistic curiosity and integrity earned her two Red Ink Awards for Excellence in Journalism from the Press Club of Mumbai, for her investigative stories on environmental clearance procedures and the world of Indian mountaineering.
Yet, it wasn’t enough. In 2013, following a life-altering volunteer experience during the Uttarakhand floods, Anusha decided to leave behind the corporate newsroom and step into the mountains, both literally and metaphorically. She found a calling that connected her storytelling with a deeper cause: using adventure to drive inclusion, build resilience, and create societal change.
Since then, Anusha has led and participated in several first-of-their-kind expeditions. In 2017, she cycled on tandem from Manali to Khardungla alongside persons with disabilities, raising awareness on inclusive adventure. In 2018, she led India’s first inclusive climbing expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro, guiding a team of blind and sighted climbers to the summit. In 2024, she guided a visually impaired woman and a unilateral amputee to Everest Base Camp, proving yet again that the outdoors is for everyone.
Through her venture Bohemian Adventures, Anusha has institutionalized inclusion. Her team regularly conducts treks and outdoor experiences for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and other marginalized groups. Her work, both on and off the mountain, challenges societal notions of who belongs in nature and who doesn’t.
As a speaker, Anusha’s voice is calm, rooted, and powerful. She has spoken at TEDx Gateway and TEDxYouth events on ‘Embracing Inclusion in the Outdoors’, where her authenticity leaves audiences both moved and motivated. She draws on her dual identity as a journalist and a mountaineer to deliver talks that are both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.
Her key speaking themes include:
Resilience in the Face of Adversity: How the mountains teach us to confront fear, embrace uncertainty, and keep going when the path disappears.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Why the outdoors must be reimagined as a space for all, and how inclusion translates into stronger teams and leadership, both on the trail and in the boardroom.
Leadership and Teamwork: Lessons from guiding teams through treacherous terrains on empathy, decision-making under pressure, and trust.
Motivation and Goal-Setting: How to break down impossible goals like summiting Kilimanjaro into small, meaningful steps that lead to lasting transformation.
The Healing Power of Nature: Why stepping outside your comfort zone and into the wild can change the way you lead, live, and love.
From Bylines to Base Camps: Her own story of quitting a successful career to pursue purpose through passion, a talk that deeply resonates with young professionals and change-seekers.
Anusha’s work has been widely recognized. She has been featured in the British Council’s Women Inspire series, Humans of Bombay, The Better India, and YourStory. She was also a senior researcher on the popular BBC Media India television show Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, where she brought to light over 50 inspiring stories of unsung heroes across India.
Currently, Anusha consults with a leading preventive healthcare company, where she authors thought-leadership content on wellness and health equity. Her research-backed storytelling is a powerful blend of data, empathy, and vision whether she’s writing an article, delivering a keynote, or guiding a team to a summit.
What makes Anusha’s talks stand out is their humanity. She doesn’t just speak about change, she lives it. Her presence uplifts, her words ignite, and her story proves that real leadership lies in inclusion, courage, and service.
Anusha Subramanian is not just a speaker. She’s a movement. And she’s ready to help your audience climb their next peak, whatever that may be.
