Navjot Singh Sidhu is an Indian politician, television personality, motivational speaker and former cricketer. He was born on 20 October 1963 in Patiala, Punjab.
After making his first-class debut in 1981–1982, Navjot Singh Sidhu enjoyed a professional cricket career that lasted more than 19 years. After making his international debut in 1983–84 and losing his spot on the national team, he came back to the 1987 World Cup and scored four half-centuries. Sidhu went on to represent his country in 136 One-Day Internationals and 51 Tests while primarily batting in the top order.
He came to be known for his six-hitting ability and earned the sobriquet ‘Sixer Sidhu’. After retirement, he turned to commentary and television, most notably as a judge of comedy shows, and as a permanent guest in Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013–15) and later The Kapil Sharma Show (since 2016). He was a contestant in the reality television show Bigg Boss (2012).
Navjot Singh Sidhu joined the Bhartiya Janata Party in 2004 and contested the general election from Amritsar. He won the election and held the seat till 2014 winning also the next election. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 from Punjab before he resigned from the position the same year and quitting the party. In 2017, he joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Amritsar East.
Navjot Singh Sidhu contested the 2004 general election from Amritsar after he joined the Bhartiya Janata Party. He was elected and retained his position until 2014, winning the subsequent election as well. He was elected from Punjab to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 but left that office and the party the next year. He joined the Indian National Congress in 2017, and from Amritsar East, he won the election to the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He currently serves as the Minister of Local Government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, and Museums of the State of Punjab.
